Depart from Australia for Vancouver, Canada and due to time difference, arrive on the same day.  On arrival, transfer to hotel and explore the local area.

Today we transfer to the airport for our flight to Juneau.  On arrival we will be met and transferred to the port to embark our expedition vessel, Quest.  Our ships permit for Tongass National Park enables you to hike and kayak in the wild and remote areas of Southeast Alaska.  Explore the Alaska State Museum and downtown Juneau.  Settle you’re your cabin before dinner.

We will voyage into Tracy Arm Fjords Terror Wilderness today with its spectacular glacially carved fjords.  We’ll pass the Sawyer Glacier which has been described as bluer than any blue on earth.  Look out for harbour seals, porpoises and Arctic Terns.

As we head towards the small, true Alaskan town of Petersburg on Mitkof Island, we search for humpback whales.  We’ll explore a unique Southeast Alaskan ecosystem, the “muskeg”, with stunted trees and carnivorous plants.  Enjoy a Dungeness crab feast this evening.

The waters of Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait are prime areas for both Killer Whales and Humpback Whales.  An opportunity today to observe their fascinating behavior – breaching, tail slapping and variations on feeding guided by our expert naturalists.  We’ll explore spectacular bays and inlets, following bear trails and salmon streams.  The still waters are excellent for kayaking, offering another option for up close exploration.

Cruise among the Inian Islands where an abundance of Steller sea lions reside.  Hike nearby islands, kayak and search for whales in the rich waters of Icy Strait.  Conditions permitting, we’ll lower the ship’s hydrophone to listen in on the whales’ communication.

Glacier Bay National Park and other outer bays are our aim today.  We will spend the entire day amidst the coves, fjords, tidewater glaciers and majestic mountains of Glacier Bay National Park.  Be on the lookout for Mountain Goats scaling the peaks as well as harbour seals , Steller Sea Lions and Puffins.  A visit to Tidal Inlet may bring brown bear sighting opportunities.  A highlight today as a native Tlingit interpreter joins us onboard to share the legend of the area.

We explore Southeast Alaska’s Islands, Bays and Fjords with nature as our guide.  We may stop at an isolated beach to take a closer look at tide pools, beachcomb and hike stunning forest trails all the time looking for bear tracks.

Sadly today we disembark Quest in Sitka, southeastern Alaska’s only oceanfront town. Sitka has a strong Russian heritage, which is readily apparent as you visit the onion-domed St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church. Enjoy a short city orientation of historic/interesting sights and buildings before we visit the Fortress of the Bear Rehabilitation Centre. Overnight Sitka.

An early departure today for our flight to Anchorage.  On arrival we will enjoy an orientation tour of the city before checking in to our hotel.

Today we travel to the historic village of Talkeetna. This rustic town, founded a century ago as the district headquarters for the new railroad, sits at the confluence of three rivers and enjoys a striking panorama of Denali and adjacent peaks. We will visit ‘Happy Trails Kennels’ where we will get to meet and learn about the sled dogs. The buildings in downtown Talkeetna date back to the early 1900’s and are designated a National Historic Site.

Today we will travel the George Parks Highway northbound towards Denali National Park.  The drive offers sweeping panoramic views and glimpses of beaver dams in the nearby river.  Today you may choose to take an optional flight over the the tallest mountain in North America, Mount McKinley.

Denali is without a doubt one of the highlights of the “Great Land” and this morning we will enjoy a wildlife tour in search of wolves, dall sheep, moose, caribou and grizzly bears.  We will admire Wonder Lake, the largest lake in the area which is often teaming with wildlife.

A leisurely start to the day today before boarding the Denali Star Railway for a spectacular rail journey to Fairbanks. The glass dome ceilings allow for magnificent panoramic views of Alaska.

We head North today to Chena Hot Springs where you can take advantage of the natural outdoor hot springs, hot tubs or indoor pool. Tonight an Aurora viewing tour in the hope to see the Northern Lights.

After exploring Fairbanks we’ll hit the road and head south to Delta Junction via the Sheep Mountain Visitor Centre, Kluane National Park. We’ll stop at Soldier Summit which commemorates the construction of the Alaska Highway.

This legendary boomtown was epicentre of the famous Klondike Gold Rush of 1898.  You can immerse yourself in Dawson’s history and try your luck panning for gold.  Stroll around the town and meet the friendly locals.  In the evening we enjoy an evening of entertainment complete with can-can girls at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall.

Off early this morning along the Dempster Highway to explore the remote town of Inuvik and The Arctic Ocean.  We’ll go as far as Tombstone Territorial Park where the mountains are dark and rugged and the vast Arctic tundra begins.  Back in Dawson City we’ll drive up The Midnight Dome and enjoy the night sky.

Today we head south along the Klondike Highway catching views of the mighty Yukon River spanning 3,200 kms. A stop at Five Finger Rapids and other small and unique villages before arriving at Whitehorse. A visit to the Aurora Centre tonight seeking the Northern Lights.

A tour of the historic and yet trendy city today visiting the SS Klondike National Historic Site with buildings and machinery dating back to the 1950’s including the last of the great paddlewheelers.

A real highlight today as we board the famous narrow gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railway for our round trip journey on this historic railway with time to explore in Skagway.

Overview

Departing on 25th August, 2022 this 26 day journey will take you through some of the most remote areas of Southeast Alaska by sea before heading North on land to explore the history of the Goldrush and Yukon Territory.

This tour was previously ‘sold out’ however now we have limited places available for you to join this incredible adventure!

On board National Geographic ‘Quest’ we will explore Alaska’s coastal wilderness.  Each day you will explore Alaska’s narrow fjords, glaciers and local communities by Zodiac, kayaking and on short walks. The ships onboard expedition equipment takes the experience to a whole new level and budding photographers can borrow the very best camera equipment from on the onboard BH Photo store. Our expedition cruise on board National Geographic “Quest” will start in Juneau and finish in Sitka.  During our time on board we will explore Tongass National Forest in the wild and remote areas of Southeast Alaska, Icy Strait and the Inian Islands, Glacier Bay, Frederick Sound, Chatham Strait, Petersburg and Tracy Arm Fjords and glaciers before arriving in Sitka.   Our land tour will start and finish in Vancouver with stays in Sitka, Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali National Park, Fairbanks, Tok, Dawson City, Whitehorse and Vancouver and will include an amazing rail journey from Denali National Park to Fairbanks on the glass-domed Denali Star Railway.  We will travel through the Yukon region by private mini-bus and rail exploring old goldrush towns placing ourselves in the Yukon region at the best time for Aurora Borealis sightings.

We will go in search of some of the most iconic species – Bald Eagle, Brown and Black Bears, Moose, Caribou, Wolves, Orca and other whale species all the time putting ourselves in prime Northern Lights regions at the perfect time.

I'm travelling alone, do I have to pay the single supplement?

No, you only are required to pay the single supplement if you wish to have single use accommodation throughout the trip.

What size bus will we be travelling in?

On land we will be travelling in a private vehicle. The size will be determined by our final group size.

How fit do I need to be?

All Girls On Tour trips require a moderate level of fitness. On this tour we will be getting in and out of zodiacs as part of exploring on National Geographic’s ‘Quest’.

How many ladies will be in our group.

A maximum of 16 travellers including your escort Judy will be in our touring group. The ship has a maximum of 100 guests.

What about COVID?

Girls On Tour, Adventure World Travel and National Geographic will abide by and be governed by the rules and regulations set down by local and federal governments. You must have travel insurance that covers you for Covid related issues whilst on tour.

Are entry fees included?

All entry fees and attractions as shown on the itinerary are included. Optional flights are available at your own cost.

What about comfort stops?

We will make regular comfort stops along the way whilst on on the bus part of our tour.

Yes, economy international fares are included from Australia to Vancouver return ex Brisbane. Other capital city departures are available on request and taxes may differ. Internal flights are also included where shown on itinerary.
